
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a balancing act. You’ve got constant steam, random splashes, and electricity all hanging out in the same small space. To get that IPX4 rating, we basically have to make sure the guts of the machine are totally cut off from the water.
Dealing with the “Leak” Problem
Here’s the thing: water loves to move electricity. In a steamy bathroom, condensation settles on everything. If that moisture finds a path to a live wire, you’ve got a problem. We handle this by using double-insulated housings and filling the terminal junctions with reinforced potting compounds—basically a heavy-duty seal that locks everything in. We also use silicone gaskets where the wires enter the unit. It stops the dampness from creeping inside where it doesn’t belong. And please, double-check your grounding. If a seal ever fails or a part pops, you want that RCD to trip instantly. You definitely don’t want the outer casing becoming live.
Heat, Steam, and Stress
Infrared lamps get hot. Really hot. That heat creates a pressure difference that can actually suck moist air right into the housing. That’s why we don’t use cheap seals. We use high-temperature gaskets that won’t shrink or warp when things heat up. If those seals go, your waterproof rating goes with them. We also swapped out standard PVC wiring for fluoropolymer insulation. PVC just can’t handle the heat cycles; it’ll crack or melt, and that’s how you end up with a short circuit.
The Trade-offs
There’s always a catch. To make these things splash-proof, the housing has to be bulkier. It also means there’s less airflow. Since the unit is sealed tight to keep water out, the internals run hotter than they would in some open-air industrial setup. Just make sure you leave enough breathing room when you mount it to the wall so you don’t overheat the structure. Also, stick with a dedicated moisture-resistant circuit breaker. It’ll keep the system running smooth without those annoying nuisance trips.
